Corey Williams

Orofino native hired as Lewiston High’s basketball coach

Corey Williams, who was born and attended school in Orofino, is Lewiston High School’s new boys’ basketball coach.

Williams, 40, who attended college in the Spokane, WA area, has been head coach of the Greenwaves at Churchill County High in Fallon, NV since 1995. The school is about 60 miles east of Reno. Despite having one of the lowest 4A enrollments in Nevada, Williams led the Greenwaves to a 19-6 recorded and a second-place league finish this past season.

Williams replaces Coach Dave Cornelia, who resigned to spend more time with his family.

According to Lewiston High School’s athletic director, Tim Sperber, Williams’ teams are known for defense. They also often win statewide academic honors.

Williams’ family moved from Orofino to Spokane while he was in grade school. He graduated from North Central Ridge and earned an undergraduate degree from Eastern Washington University in 1993.

His parents, Rodger and Joan Williams, have returned to the Orofino area, and Williams has other relatives in the Lewiston area.

The decision to move to Lewiston was one shared by his wife, Melissa, from Cheney, WA, according to Williams. The couple has a young daughter.

Williams will also serve at Lewiston High School’s physical education/health teacher.
